Leitrim Organic Farmers Coop was established in 1998. It was established with the objectives of developing markets for its members produce and providing education and training. In 2001 the coop was successful in applying for a Social Economy Programme under FAS which is now Community Services Programme under Pobal. The coop provides services to both smallholders and organic farmers in Leitrim and surrounding counties.
It has supply arrangemenrs with the Slaney Foods Group for both organic beef and lamb. It works to develop outlets for weanling and store cattle from the region it services. The coop also established the mobile butchers model in the region where organic eat is sold at farmers markets. This is now run by Irish Organic Meats and services 3 local farmers markets
The coop itself was the primary mover in the establishment of Carrick on Shannon Farmers Market in 2007 and is one of the most successful in Ireland. In adition it provides support to other farmers market. We are also involved in local festivals such as Taste of Carrick, Harvest Feast and Roscommon Lamb Festival.
The coop publishes quarterly newsletter and also works closely wit local organic marts . It established the first organic sale in conjunction wih Drumshanbo Mart in 2000 and the mart hosts 8 marts in 2016. In addition the coop spends a lot of time in matching buyers of cattle sellers primarily from the west
